Potential side effects

  • Temporary shedding of mature hairs strands (that would have fallen out anyways) when starting minoxidil can be expected—that means it’s working.
  • One potential side effect of oral minoxidil in the low doses used to treat hair thinning and hair loss can be increased hair growth on the face or body (hypertrichosis). In a clinical study of 1404 patients looking at the safety of oral minoxidil, 15% experienced increased hair growth on their face or body, but only 0.5% of participants stopped treatment as a result of that side effect.
  • Other potential and less common side effects include lightheadedness, palpitations, leg swelling, headaches, swelling around the eyes, and insomnia.
  • Always reach out to a provider if you experience any side effects. Questions and follow up care with a licensed provider is included with Hers.

Who should not take Biotin + Minoxidil?

  • Biotin + Minoxidil was formulated by dermatologists for women over 18 years old looking to treat hair thinning and hair loss.
  • Biotin + Minoxidil should not be used if you’re allergic to minoxidil, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Biotin + Minoxidil might also not be appropriate if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, pheochromocytoma, problems with your blood pressure or have experienced sudden onset of increased muscularity (deepening of the voice, enlargement of the clitoris, or excessive hair growth on the face or body).
  • A licensed provider will assess your online intake form to determine if Biotin + Minoxidil is right for you.

Frequently asked
questions about
Biotin + Minoxidil

How long until I see results?

Biotin + Minoxidil combines biotin and minoxidil into one treatment. Minoxidil is an ingredient that is clinically shown to regrow hair in 3-6 months.*

*Source: Randolph, Michael and Antonella Tosti. “Oral minoxidil treatment for hair loss: A review of efficacy and safety.” J. of the Academy of American Dermatology. (2021).

What are potential side effects of biotin and minoxidil?

When taken orally in the low doses used to treat hair thinning and hair loss, potential side effects of minoxidil include increased hair growth on the face or body (hypertrichosis). In a clinical study of 1404 patients looking at the safety of oral minoxidil, 15% experienced increased hair growth on their face or body, but only 0.5% of participants stopped treatment as a result of that side effect.

Other potential and less common side effects include lightheadedness, palpitations, leg swelling, headaches, swelling around the eyes, and insomnia.

Can I use both topical minoxidil and Biotin + Minoxidil?

It’s not recommended to use both topical and oral minoxidil at the same time. Using a combo of these hair loss treatments has not been shown to improve results.

If I already take biotin supplements, can I combine that with Biotin + Minoxidil?

There is not one recommended dosage for biotin supplements. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin and does not build up in the body’s fat stores like vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. Instead, excess biotin is excreted from the body, which lowers the risk of excessive consumption in comparison to fat-soluble vitamins.

However, Biotin + Minoxidil is formulated with dermatologists who have determined a dosage of 2.5 mg as appropriate when combined with oral minoxidil. It is not recommended that you take additional biotin supplements.

High doses of biotin (5 mg or higher) may interfere with certain lab tests, including specific tests to aid in heart attack diagnoses.

A provider will review your medical history and determine if Biotin + Minoxidil is right for you. If you start taking any additional supplements, consult a provider through Hers. Questions and follow up care with a licensed provider is included with Hers.

Can I use Biotin + Minoxidil while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No, you should not use minoxidil when pregnant, breastfeeding or while planning to become pregnant.

Does minoxidil increase shedding?

Yes, hair shedding can increase, but it’s temporary and can be a sign that the medication is working towards growing new hair and improving hair density. Minoxidil is thought to work by increasing blood flow to hair follicles to help them stay in the growth phase longer. When you start taking minoxidil, the medication acts to encourage the prolongation of the growth phase of the hair follicles. In doing so, it pushes more mature follicles that are no longer growing (and would have fallen out eventually) to be released and shed. Typically the shedding can start after a couple weeks to a couple months after starting and last for a few weeks after that.

Where can I buy Biotin + Minoxidil with biotin and minoxidil?

Biotin + Minoxidil is a compounded prescription treatment blending minoxidil, a prescription treatment for hair regrowth, with biotin. Biotin + Minoxidil is only available by prescription through Hers and requires an assessment from a licensed medical provider (which you can do for free, 100% online through Hers) who will determine if it’s appropriate for you.

Does biotin come in different formats?

Yes. Biotin is most common in a supplement form, but liquid biotin has also been gaining traction in the past few years. Biotin + Minoxidil has biotin and minoxidil combined together in a chewable tablet, for a simple, 2-in-1, once-a-day treatment. The chewable also has a tasty lemon flavor, which makes taking it even easier.

What other minoxidil treatments are available?

Minoxidil is a popular treatment for women with female pattern hair loss (alopecia). In addition to Biotin + Minoxidil, we offer minoxidil 5% foam, 2% minoxidil topical solution, and oral minoxidil for women.

We only offer topical 5% minoxidil foam and drops for men on Hims.
